Tomatin distils its peated barley for its peated Cù Bòcan series during just one week a year in the winter, so each batch is limited, as is the case with this 12 Year Old. It's a first for the smoky whisky with a rum cask maturation, having spent its final days in a mix of rum casks from Guyana and Barbados, with the former adding full-bodied spicy notes, and the latter bringing fresh tropical fruits and maritime hints. As such it’s a decidedly summery dram, albeit a gently warming one.
Nose: Fresh mango with a pinch of salt, fragrant smoke, ginger cake, and marshmallow sweetness.
Palate: Barbecued pineapple, salted white chocolate, and cinnamon butter.
Finish: More fresh tropical fruit and candied ginger spice on a subtly smoky finish.
The fifth addition to Tomatin's Cù Bòcan Creation series, exploring a variety of unusual cask finishes to the lightly peated single malt. This edition has been finished in incredibly rare Colombian Andean oak casks, imparting rich layers of char and herbaceous, floral notes. The label includes "campfire banana splits" as a tasting note, which we think describes it tremendously. Bottled without added colour or chill filtration.
Nose: Buttery shortbread and floral malt, with rooibos tea and fresh charcoal in tow.
Palate: Creamy white chocolate and grilled peach lead to jammier notes of plum, with aromatic herbs and toasted, woody spice.
Finish: Campfire banana splits ey? Yep, that works, there's creaminess, soft fruit, foam banana sweeties, and elegant wood smoke gliding throughout.
